A natural black earth pigment, sourced from Italy.
Warmer than a pure carbon-based black, however not as warm as say a Cassel earth - in fact it is hard to find any brown hue in this at all, remarkable given its mineral origin.
In masstone a stong mid black, when spread out with the palette knife it shows its almost opaque nature, at a push when very thin there is a hint of transparency. It is a good tinter and makes a wide range of warmish greys.
Smoothly ground and not thin like some earth pigments, has a good body to it. Non-greasy.
A historically accurate paint.
