Description

Yellow travertine is part of a set of five new colours released by Rublev, all single pigment and all sourced from Armenia - each is quite different in hue, but they have great synergy and are very analogous in hue when used together. Utterly unique pigments, sourced and processed by Rublev.

The mass tone is a warm, earthy orange hue - a bit like a rich yellow ochre with an orange edge - less orange chroma than the swatch above suggests.

Tints with titanium white produce lush, soft beiges.

Dense and fine grained, average to low tint power for an earth. Slightly short, a little medium improves the length.

Fascinating paint.

Rublev's Description;

"Yellow Travertine oil paint is made with a natural earth pigment derived from travertine—porous limestone formed when mineral‑rich waters precipitate calcium carbonate. Travertine deposits are found at springs and river banks; when pure, they are white, but small amounts of iron oxide give our Armenian travertine a pale yellow‑beige tint. Travertine has been quarried since antiquity, and the name is derived from the Latin lapis tiburtinus (Tivoli Stone). The pigment is finely ground and contains mostly calcium carbonate with trace amounts of silica, iron oxide, aluminium, and sulphur. Yellow Travertine is compatible with all painting media and exhibits excellent lightfastness and weather‑fastness because its colourant is iron oxide.

In oil paint, the colour has a low tinting strength, semi‑opaque body, and a gentle drying rate. It produces delicate warm tints in mixes and cleans easily when mixed with whites. Professional painters seeking subtle natural tones will find Yellow Travertine a valuable addition to their palette."
