This walnut oil is is cold-pressed from freshly dried walnuts (Juglans regia), and then lightly refined. It is a clear, pale yellow oil that has a distinctive odour. As a thin oil, it is used to make oil paint more fluid. As it yellows less than linseed oil (but more than safflower oil) it is good for making pale oil colors. Walnut oil dries more slowly than linseed oil, drying in four or five days. It is said to have a less tendency to crack than linseed oil.
As early as the fifth century walnut oil was recommended by Aetius for varnishing wax pictures and gilt surfaces. It is recommended for all light pigments in the treatises on painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Vasari, Borghini, Lornazzo, Armenini, Bisagno, Volpato and others.
Must be stored out of direct sunlight.
We've not used our new oil yet, but love its beautiful clarity - it is so much clearer than our current linseed oil, so we are very hopeful that it will be perfect in use. Fast delivery and very well packaged, as ever from Supreme Paints, thank you!

Supreme paint! They sell some of the highest quality paints and mediums money can buy, it's a blessing to have this site in the UK, where often the brands are far too expensive. I love their cute branded boxes too, perfect for gifts. Their postage is fast and very reasonably priced too. Great site.
