Caput Mortuum from Latin means 'dead head' or 'worthless remains' which regarding this colour is pretty harsh in my opinion!
It is a densely saturated red purple, synthetic earth based. Very opaque, obviously it will be useful in portraiture. In masstone, it is a rich cool, red purple. Once tinted with white light, cool mauve colours appear.
In hue it has a bruised flesh feel. It has high pigment loading and is surprisingly clean in mixing for such a dirty colour, if that makes any sense!
