Description

A reclaimed violet earth.

Caput mortuum is Latin for 'dead head', it is a name used for various iron oxide pigments which reside in the violet/purple area of the colour spectrum.

In masstone it is a fairly flat brown hue, this is a mixing colour useful for it's ability to shift mixes rather than a stand alone hue. Slightly gritty under the palette knife.

Once white is added it produces warmish greys, with hint of lilac in there, it isn't as strong in chroma as some purple ochres but there is a clear leaning towards violet. Overall quite neutral in tints.

The pigment is derived as a by product of quarrying in Nottinghamshire in England, very carefully selected, washed, sieved and dried.

Sustainable, functional and unique.
