Description

Olive umber is part of a set of five new colours released by Rublev, all single pigment and all sourced from Armenia - each is quite different in hue, but they have great synergy and are very analogous in hue when used together. Utterly unique pigments, sourced and processed by Rublev.

High pigment load, fine pigment size.

In masstone - a dark green earth, with lots of body - average tint power for an earth. With white added it makes soft green greys, quite neutral and cool.

I have just mixed some of the tints of the yellow travertine in with this olive umber tint and it makes such a beautiful shimmering chromatic grey - works extremely well with the other Armenian colours!

Slightly shorter or stiffer in handling compared to the rest of the Rublev range - I found a little of the Oleogel medium helped to make it longer in the brushstroke.

Rublev's description;

"Olive Umber oil paint contains a natural greenish‑brown earth pigment composed mainly of iron oxide with manganese oxide impurities. In nature, umbers are hydrated iron‑manganese oxides formed by the weathering of iron‑rich rocks. The presence of manganese darkens the hue and promotes faster drying in oil paint. The olive hue of this pigment originates from a deposit in Kotayk Province, Armenia. The pigment’s mean particle size falls between 0 and 29 µm, with most particles under 15 µm, resulting in a finely ground colour that disperses smoothly.

In paint, Olive Umber is semi‑opaque, with a medium tinting strength and a fast drying rate due to its manganese content. The olive undertone is ideal for neutralizing bright mixtures and for creating atmospheric greens and shadow hues. Artists appreciate the natural origin and stability of true umber compared to synthetic iron oxides."
