Description
Manganese black is a single pigment (PBk 14) oil paint - quite dense in handling - fairly temperature neutral black - unusually for a black oil paint it is not made from a carbon based pigment.
The manganese acts as a drier, so pretty quick drying. None of the oiliness sometimes associated with carbon blacks - also it is a really strong tinter with excellent coverage, and it happily soaks up titanium white!
Possibly not quite as light absorbing as some blacks, in bright daylight it has almost a very slight greyish edge in masstone.
Excellent and unusual alternative to a carbon black.
Langridge's description;
"Manganese black is made from an unusual pigment and provides a fast-drying black. Excellent underpainting black alternative to slow drying carbon-based blacks.
Its particle size lends a slight gritty feel. When light catches the surface, it exhibits a graphite-like sheen."
