Description
Hookers green, probably more familiar to watercolourists, is a new colour in the Michael Harding range. It is named after the 19th century botanical illustrator William Hooker, an image of his work is shown above.
In masstone, the paint is a very dark green with a low tonal value - almost verging on black with green just still perceptible.
It is classed as semi-transparent however I spread the paint as thinly as I could onto a white ground, and it still appeared opaque - none of the ground showed through the paint film, I think this is down to the sheer density of the colour - being so dark.
Once white is added its true hue comes out more and slightly warm green tints are produced, along the lines of a chromium oxide green.
There is a slight yellow undertone to the colour which is where it differs, from the chromium green, I guess this is the arylide yellow making its presence known - also the phthalo green element of the paint is a yellow shade version of that particular pigment. The yellow undertone is subtle though and in no means overwhelming.
Strong tinter and has no problem with Titanium white.
