Description

A red shade phthalo blue combined with mars black gives cosmic blue! Undeniably a great name.

The paint is almost black in masstone, when spread thinly on a white ground the transparency is apparent and the colour is revealed more, it appears as a slightly 'ramped up' Indigo in hue. The phthalo element is clearly visible with that slightly jarring aspect to the colour that I find phthalo pigments have.

Due to the high tint power, it eats white! Go easy on this in mixes.

The tints with white are really good, blue leaning greys with a wide tonal range given the tint strength and dark masstone. I was pleasantly surprised - to me its value lies in the tints, but if you could find a way to incorporate the transparency into your work, it would open a lot more doors.

Michael's description;

"Subtle, gem-like, yet icy. Hidden within a dark, shadowy black lies a remarkable sapphire-like blue that reveals itself gradually as it is worked. Cosmic Blue offers something quite different from the traditional blues, possessing depth, mystery and an unexpected luminosity."
