Description
Van dyke brown - this is a colour which varies massively according to the pigment used, usually made from an earth pigment, this particular one is made from manganese hydroxide.
In masstone it is a warm chocolate brown, opaque and smoothly ground.
Once white is added, tints of pinkish violet greys are produced, traditionally used in portrait work, these subtle fleshy hues are a prime example as to why this paint is perfect for that.
Without the heat of a burnt sienna and without the coldness of an umber this sits somewhere in between, and that is where it is most useful.
