Description
Red barite is part of a set of five new colours released by Rublev, all single pigment and all sourced from Armenia - each is quite different in hue, but they have great synergy and are very analogous in hue when used together.
Utterly unique pigment, sourced and processed by Rublev - available nowhere else!
Finely grained, high tinting red earth, along the lines of an Indian red or Hematite. The masstone hue is a deep, red-brown, quite opaque but spread very thinly with a palette knife I can get the white ground to show through.
The tints with white are coolish, pink fleshy hues, slight bluish edge in there.
A little of the Oleogel medium helped to make it a little longer in the brushstroke.
Rublev's description;
"Red Barite oil paint uses a distinctive Armenian earth pigment composed of hematite (red iron oxide), barite (barium sulfate), quartz and clay. Unlike typical ochers that contain large amounts of calcite, this pigment contains up to 42 % barite and around 28 % iron oxide. Barite is dense and inert, while hematite is among the most lightfast pigments known. The deposit is located near the historic copper mines of Akhtala in the Lori Province of Armenia. Ground to a mean particle size of about 10 µm, the pigment has a high density (≈ 4.3 g/cm³) and gives a strong, deep red colour with excellent covering power. It remains stable under ultraviolet light and in the presence of alkali or lime because both barite and hematite are chemically inert.
In oil paint Red Barite is opaque and has high tinting strength similar to Indian Red. It dries at a medium rate and produces permanent, rich red earth hues useful in portraiture, figure painting and architectural subjects. This colour appeals to painters who appreciate the subtle depth of natural iron oxides and the historical authenticity of earth pigments."
