Dark, crimson, purple leaning, synthetic iron oxide.
In masstone it is a cold, muted red.
Being a 'Mars' colour it has high tinting strength leading to a great many cold fleshy tints, it has a good affinity with other earths, mixing nicely with the Rublev Mars Yellow which warms it up, to create some delightful caucasian skin hues.

"Mars Red is an intense maroon (dark brownish red with purple undertones) oil colour. Originally a brand name in the late 18th century, Mars colors is now the common name for synthetic iron oxide pigments. Their chemical and physical properties are similar to the natural iron oxides.
Mars Red is a high tinting iron oxide pigment with deep purple undertones. We grind it in pale refined linseed oil. The very fine particle size of the pigment gives this paint a thick buttery consistency that pulls long with the brushstroke."
