Description

Orange travertine is part of a set of five new colours released by Rublev, all single pigment and all sourced from Armenia - each is quite different in hue, but they have great synergy and are very analogous in hue when used together.

A unique orange earth, in masstone it is a rich orange oxide, earthy hue - more chroma than an orange ochre, but not as overwhelming in earth mixes as an orange ochre would be due to less tinting power. Also has the least tinting strength of the Armenian earth range.

With white it makes soft, salmon, orange-pinks.

I just tried mixing it into the red barite, to lift the temperature and it works a treat - between those two colours you can create a massive range of Caucasian flesh hues from cool to warm.

Transparent, so more opportunities there for glazing and such. Again quite short in handling, a little medium such as Oleogel gets it longer in the brushstroke.

Really functional paint this, particularly on a portrait palette, for lifting temperature without shifting hue too much.

Rublev's Description;

"Orange Travertine oil paint is milled from a travertine pigment with a higher iron‑oxide content than Yellow Travertine, giving it a warm orange tint. Travertine is a sedimentary limestone deposited from mineral‑rich springs; the Romans used it and took its name from lapis tiburtinus (Tivoli Stone). In this Armenian deposit, the travertine contains calcium carbonate (~48 %) and small amounts of iron oxide, silica, sulfur, and alumina. Ground to a mean particle size of about 8 µm, the pigment is easy to disperse in oil and provides excellent permanence because the colourant is iron oxide.

In paint, Orange Travertine has medium tinting strength and a semi‑opaque body. It tints warm, earthy oranges with a gentle drying rate, making it suitable for glazing or underpainting. The colour adds subtle warmth to landscapes and flesh tones while maintaining the natural, mineral character that many artists seek today."
