Description
An excellent thick gel medium for impasto.
Rather than a putty type impasto medium like the Rublev impasto medium - this is a very thick gel.
It is a pleasure to use because of its solvent free recipe - in terms of sculptural impasto putty mediums will provide more substance and a deeper impasto, however they are hard to 'paint' with being so substantial - the brushstroke is 'short'.
So this is an impasto medium where you can still work the paint as you would with a 'normal painting'. For this reason it wonderful for Velázquez like highlights or Lucian Freud like brushstrokes without the lead paint.
Langridges description;
"Impasto Medium should be added to oil colours in quantities no more than 25%. Mixed with oil colours, it may be applied with a brush or palette knife in thicker films than any other Langridge medium.
Initially small additions will stiffen the handling of existing oil colours. As more medium is added, the oil colour will be suspended and extended forming a thick paste. When worked using a brush or palette knife the medium becomes slightly looser allowing for easy incorporation with colours.
The Safflower oil content in Impasto Medium is slow drying allowing for a wet-in-wet technique with very controlled manipulation of paint including soft blending.
Langridge Impasto Medium has a high oil content and, as such, is a ‘fat’ medium. Due to it’s physical nature Langridge recommends not over painting Impasto medium with any other medium.
Dries to a satin finish."
