Description
Probably the most authentic and unique oil paint brushes out there - built with Tom's ever present, deep research and extensive testing - carefully crafted, using bristles sourced directly from wild boar hides.
A set of four brushes, ranging from size 1 to size 4.
Over to Tom for a deeper description;
"These brushes are constructed using methods that would have been familiar to artists working during the 14th century, in a period where painters made their own brushes to suit their approach as a routine part of their craft.
Rather than sporting the traditional, familiar round point, these brushes have a relatively blunt, slightly irregular end which flares out and has no 'belly’. This allows for the type of marks observed in the more expressive of the Old Masters such as Titian, Rembrandt, Velázquez or El Greco, particularly when paired with my Lead White Substitutes.
I work directly from hides I source and do not straighten, bleach or alter the natural state of the bristles. The flags within these bristles vary and can be very exaggerated, helping to contribute to the marks produced. They'll easily facilitate broken mark making with stiff colours, precise cutting in, washes and glazes with fluid colours and with a little practice, fine working and blending.
Each brush is shaped by hand, embracing the natural curve and kink of the bristles selected - no two brushes will make the same mark and through use will form an individual character. They feature high strength rot resistant nylon ferrules which are bound by hand and birch handles sharpened at the end for sgraffito which are treated with linseed oil for easy serviceability in the studio."
