Description

Gris de payne - also known as Payne's grey.

A combination of two pigments, black and blue gives this deep, cool, dark hue. It is in essence a gentler, cooler black, particularly useful in building up greys and given its semi-transparent nature, it could be used in laying in deep, transparent dark passages. Slightly loose in handling.

As ever handmade by one person in small batches with no additives!

Francois's description;

"A deep, balanced blue-grey, traditionally formulated from black and blue pigments. Cool in undertone, it offers a softer alternative to pure black with excellent versatility. In masstone it appears near-black; mixed with white it produces subtle, atmospheric greys. Ground in linseed and walnut oils for a smooth, slightly fluid handling. Drying time varies depending on composition, generally suitable across all layers."
