Description
The name 'caput mortuum' comes from Latin and means 'dead head' or 'worthless remains' - historically related to alchemy - eventually the term has found a place alongside this colour, why I am not sure!
The paint and hue are dense, it is based on a synthetic iron oxide - these iron oxides tend to be very finely powdered pigments, lending weight and body to the paint.
Opaque, obviously it will be useful in portraiture, with its warm, flat, earthiness.
Francois's description;
"A rich, earthy violet-brown, traditionally based on iron oxides. Warm and muted in undertone, it offers depth and subtle complexity. In masstone it is dense and dark; mixed with white it reveals soft, dusty mauves. Ground in linseed and walnut oils for a smooth, slightly shorter handling. A relatively fast-drying pigment, well suited for both underpainting and upper layers."
Please note - as this paint contains no emulsifiers and it is a dense pigment, the paint tube is best stored on its cap.
