Venetian Red - 50ml

£15.75

A frequent constituent of Italian renaissance paintings, it used to be known as Sinopia. Very useful in portraiture and historically it was mixed with a lime based white for this purpose. The pigment for this paint is sourced in Northern Italy.

In masstone it is a vibrant red/brown, more red than brown and rather luminous. It has a very nice earthy feel to it and hasn't been over ground, you can just feel the pigment in the paint.

Given it's pink undertones and vibrancy it's tints are pinky flesh hues, they are warmer and less blue leaning than the swatch on the left shows, in reality they are warm, deep and pink. It has relatively strong tinting power for an earth and there is a wide range of steps in the tints.

Making use of it's transparency, when used thinly it creates a fiery orange/red hue.

Red iron oxide or ferric oxide is the principle colouring agent in Venetian red. This colour is based on the natural mineral hematite associated with varying proportions of other minerals such as clay, chalk and silica.

A very red venetian red

A beautiful tube of paint. As I said in the title it feels redder than some varieties I've used and is clean and tints beautifully. Recommended
