An Iron Oxide processed to such a small pigment particle size that it shows almost lake-like characteristics. Excellent tint power which produces wonderful results in mixes with yellows and in making flesh tints .
It can also be used to give gravity to mid-red tones.
Makes fantastic rich, warm blacks and dark tones when mixed with greens, it can hold its own against something like a permanent green. It is a very functional and useful colour.
Personally I find it extremely useful when mixed with Ultramarine blue to create warm/cool greys depending on the balance of the colours.
A workhorse on the palette - lots of functionality.
