Shungite is a carbon rich mineral generally found in Russia. I have never seen it made into oil paint before.
Apart from being suited as a pigment for oil paint, it also is renowned for its healing properties, Peter the Great developed a spa using Shungite and instigated its use in the Russian army for water purification, now it is revered for its ability to absorb radiation, a piece of raw Shungite is pictured opposite.
Now to the paint itself!
In masstone unsurprisingly it is a dark, rich black hue. It is gritty in nature and you can feel the Shungite particles under a palette knife. I was very impressed when white was added as it has really good tinting power and produces a wide range of coolish greys, not too far off a bone black in hue.
